Queen of Earth (2015)

Urban Life
Our thoughts on another production from the director-actress duo that gifted us ‘Her Smell'. Watch Moss as Catherine, a bereaved New York City snob in search of a lake-side retreat, devolve into psychosomatic unravelling.

The Assistant (2019)

Urban Life
When director Kitty Green was looking to cast the protagonist of her upcoming movie, she needed someone ‘infinitely watchable'. Enter Julia Garner and her meticulous portrayal of an aspiring young film producer who finds herself at the beck and call of a veteran predator.

Olla (2019)

Urban Life
Ariane Labed’s revolutionary 30 minute drama, Olla, follows a Western European woman that responds to an online dating ad to be a “wife” to French man Pierre, as well as taking care of his elderly mother in a french suburb. After the superficial relationship starts to turn toxic, Olla (who has an unapologetic idgaf attitude) starts doing small acts of rebellion to take control and to gain respect within her vulnerable situation...just a shame that the film is only 30 minutes long!

Helter Skelter (2013)

Urban Life
Based on the psychological horror manga by Kyoko Okazaki, Mika Ninagawa’s film 'Helter Skelter' triumphs the nightmarish and sinister reality that burdens the world of fashion and beauty. A gruesome horror-show at its core, this might just be the thrill that you seek, just make sure you keep an eye out for that ending!

Her Smell (2018)

Urban Life
A portrait of a turbulent punk-rock queen hearkening back to the 90's counter-cultural movement dismantling the macho-monopolisation of grunge music - aka cock rock. Moss's ability to swerve between extremes of volatility and vulnerability is uncanny and will embark the viewer on your own turbulent viewing experience.

The United States Vs. Billie Holiday (2021)

Urban Life
The United States Vs Billie Holiday was released on Hulu earlier this month and we're still obsessed with Andra Days incredible performance as Billie Holiday. Costume designer Paolo Nieddu delved into the Prada archives to recreate many of Holiday's signature looks. However, directed by Lee Daniels, the overall film is muddled and left us feeling more confused than empowered by one of the most influential jazz singers of all time.

I Hate Suzie (2020)

Urban Life
Female characters no longer have to be likeable, or relatable in order to be fully realised-and television is all the better for it. Gone are the tired stereotypes of femme fatale or good little housewife, to offer us characters who are both genuinely a mess, but also show glimmers of hope. As they say, get you a girl that does both-or all of it.

The Imperialists Are Still Alive! (2010)

Urban Life
Zeina Durra’s 2010 film The Imperialists Are Still Alive! explores a censored sub-culture of New York’s elite, providing us with a multicultural vision of urbanity as we join our heroine Asya through her relentless affinity with gallery openings, clubs and bars. Shot on 16mm, the film is a visual treat, perfect for all the hopeless romantics among us.
